Hosting F.A.Q.
How much disk space
do I have for my site?
Currently we do not have disk quotas in place. We trust our customers
to control their own disk usage and keep it within reason. This has
not been a problem in the past. If your site grows above 2 gigabytes in
size (most do not) please let us know and we can make arrangements for
more disk space.
What kind of server does LACA use, and what options are availalble?
Our sites are hosted on Windows 2000/2003 servers under Internet
Information Server (IIS). We have Frontpage Extensions 2002 loaded
on each site. We also have PHP installed if you want to run PHP
scripts. We run Microsoft Index Server if you want to install a
search engine that queries Index Server on your site. If you
have special needs or requests, or if any of the services mentioned above
do not appear to be working, please contact Chad Carson at
ccarson@laca.org for assistance.
What domain names
can I use?
LACA can register domain
names for you in the K12.OH.US domain space for free (example:
heath.k12.oh.us, maysville.k12.oh.us). You can choose the name you
wish to use (subject to availability). The name will be yours to use
indefinitely. If you wish to use a .COM, .ORG, or other
name for your website, LACA does not register those names. Those
must be done through commercial companies with an average cost of about
$15.00 per year per domain name.
Below is a list of some
commonly used registration companies. LACA does not directly endorse any
of these companies...this list is provided to give you a starting point
for conducting your own research.

If I purchase a domain name of my own for my district/school, can I
still host my site with LACA?
Yes, we will provide you with a unique IP address on our server for your
site. It will then be your responsibility to update that IP address
into the DNS server of the company you purchased your domain name from.
Most companies offer a web-interface that you log into to update your DNS
records.
What if I want to
also use my purchased domain name for my district e-mail addresses?
That is possible. You would just have to update your DNS records
to send all mail to LACA for that domain. This is done by updating a
special record called an MX record (Mail eXchanger) and pointing the MX
record to 208.108.136.6 or SMTP.LACA.ORG (LACA's primary e-mail server).
Then work with Chad Carson at LACA to make the switch from LACA.ORG e-mail
addresses to your new domain name.
